Coordinate translation with the learning pace
Training works when participants have time to understand and practise. Consecutive interpreting generally adds time compared with a single-language presentation. Keeping an overcrowded agenda and asking the interpreter to omit details can undermine the learning objective. Agree pauses, terminology and question handling with the trainer before the session.
Illustrative scenario
An illustrative software workshop includes demonstrations and group exercises. If the trainer keeps clicking while the interpreter explains, learners miss steps. The team breaks the demonstration into individual actions, pauses for interpretation and then asks participants to practise.
Client preparation checklist
- Share slides, exercises, interface examples and learning objectives.
- Allow time for questions, translated instructions and breaks.
- Use consistent terminology across slides, spoken explanations and handouts.
Practical point
Include the interpreter in a preparatory conversation with the trainer to identify fast demonstrations and examples that need context.
