Distinguish a proposal from an agreed decision

A conditional statement can sound like a commitment when its qualification disappears in translation. Interpreters should preserve uncertainty, questions and the limits of each statement. Your authorised representatives make commercial decisions; an interpreter should not negotiate, advise or accept terms on your behalf without a separately defined role. Agree how figures and action points will be checked.

Illustrative scenario

In an illustrative negotiation, a buyer says it may increase an order if the sample meets requirements. The translation must retain that condition. At the end, both sides distinguish confirmed points from matters awaiting approval rather than assuming that the larger order is already agreed.

Client preparation checklist

Share meeting objectives, participant roles and product terminology.
Speak in turns and pause to confirm important numbers or qualifications.
Assign a minute-taker; scope any written translation required after the meeting separately.

Practical point

State currencies, units and deadlines explicitly. Asking for a number again is preferable to guessing merely to maintain speed.
